List of Abstracts 2018: PLENARY SESSION - NEW CHALLENGES OF SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
Date: December 3, 2018
VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) in the business world is growing year on year. Value Creation in general and Supply Chains in particular must become much more robust and flexible to cope with these challenges. Enabled by available data and computational power a transformation is taking place that is deeply inspired by nature. Since evolution is the only thing that has actually worked successfully over the last 3.5 billion years on this planet, bio-intelligent value creation seems to be a good option to go for. The paper will: (1) look at where logistics research is heading in the coming years; (2) provide insights into the re-organisation of supply chains based on autonomous and cellular machines and algorithms; (3) give concrete examples of innovations and projects.
Globalized e-business is changing the retail markets fundamentally all over the world. The growth of Amazon, Alibaba, ebay and other platforms has affected both competition and logistics. Local retail companies may experience severe competition difficulties against this kind of logistically highly efficient competition. In the Finnish postal service logistics the number of traditional letters have declined dramatically, but a significant increase has also happened simultaneously on parcel deliveries. Of course the parcels have generated much welcome revenues to postal services, but especially numerous small pouches shipped from China have clogged the postal logistics systems and caused lots of additional costs, work and problems.
As the small plastic pouches having Chinese postal barcodes on them are not machine handleable, must the Finnish postal service handle them manually and also re-input the address data etc. to their systems manually. All this cost time, work and money and the question is, who should pay for it. Another problem is the fact that in many cases remain all the customs fees and VAT unpaid because of the mainly low declaration (either realistic or manipulated) value and the vast volume of these small shipments. How could a VAT-paying local retailer with fixed business costs compete against this? Also are the postage cost paid by Chinese e-business companies to China Post realistic or just a form of unacceptable support for export business?
The lecture will explain how sustainability in logistics is understood by one of the Europe’s largest car manufacturers. Transport in Europe is already responsible for a quarter of all produced greenhouse gas emissions and its share will grow sharply in the upcoming years. Green Logistics must be perceived as a global trend, which requires our attention. The lecture introduces listeners to the approach of ŠKODA AUTO Logistics to the issue of Green Logistics. First, it will offer a general introduction to the topic and explain why it is important to be concerned with sustainability. Subsequently, the explanation of operation model and development of Green Logistics across ŠKODA AUTO Logistics will follow. It will familiarize listeners with the different Green Logistics strategic areas, which are being developed at ŠKODA, AUTO, as well as how Green Logistics is evaluated. However, the main goal of the presentation is to introduce implementation of Green Logistics in practice. Demonstration of applied solutions within Green Logistics will be provided. The lecture will enable the listeners to observe the development of implemented Green Logistics measures into the real environment.
The listeners will understand how Green Logistics is perceived within ŠKODA AUTO Logistics and will familiarize with its practical implementation.
