List of Abstracts 2023: SESSION B - SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS PROCESSES
Date: November 8, 2023
The main results of the international project "Virtual Open Course of Automotive Life Cycle Assessment" aLIFEca was developing LCA MOOC (life cycle assessment massive open online course) for transport sector. The LCA MOOC included results of scientific research of life cycle assessment and environmental footprints of vehicles and transport fuels like: conventionally powered vehicles, electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. LCA MOOC is a decision support tool for the needs of sustainable transport management, taking into account the life cycle approach.
The e-commerce market is dynamically growing. Attractive purchase prices, low cost, short time and convenient delivery place are important factors motivating consumers to online shopping. In turn, the free return possibility motivates customers to buy more and more products and then return them to the retailer. As a result, courier companies face increasing challenges regarding return logistics in e-commerce. The purpose of this paper is to identify preferences of e-customers and possibility of their change in return logistics to organize it in a sustainable manner. To achieve this goal, the conjoint analysis will be applied based on survey conducted among 1,100 e-customers.
The paper is a result of the research project: Sustainable last-mile delivery and returns on e-commerce market. Perspective of various stakeholders Funded by the Polish National Science Centre, No. 2018/31/B/HS4/03711.
The aim of this paper is to compare the ESG strategies of major airport in East Asia. ESG is popular managerial issue, and airline business requires clear ESG strategies for future planning. Geopolitics, pandemic, and extreme weather have already cause serious supply chain disruptions in the past 5 years. Therefore, this paper aims to compare the current ESG policy of major international airport of East Asia including Japan, Korea and Taiwan. By literature review of policy white book, we may understand the difference of ESG strategies in terms of sustainability, resilience and technological application of East Asian airport.
The logistics industry is experiencing digitalization and faces growing customer demands, fierce competition, and internationally connected markets. At the same time, the logistics industry is under pressure through political environmental decisions. It is estimated that there are 278 million commercial vehicles in the world, most of which are trucks used to transport goods. In addition, there are millions of privately owned trucks that contribute to even more trucks in the world. The logistics and transport sector contributes a third of global CO2 emissions, making it the most emitting sector in many countries. This proportion is still growing. Therefore, emphasis must be placed on the use of green fuels in the logistics industry. Electric trucks are an innovative technology that could increase the efficiency of freight transport and contribute to a more sustainable logistics future. Electric trucks are one of the most important advances in urban logistics in parallel with the Smart City concepts. Electric trucks are equipped with one or more electric motors to drive. This system reduces the CO2 footprint because no greenhouse gases are emitted. In 2023, many companies are looking to reduce the environmental impact of their operations, and electric trucks could contribute to a more sustainable supply chain. This article discusses the importance of electromobility in logistics and the importance of including electric trucks in the logistics industry's fleets. The methodological part of the article consists of an analysis of secondary sources from which the connections between logistics and e-mobility were derived. In the discussion and conclusion of the article, possible recommendations are presented through which it is possible to understand the importance of implementing electric trucks in the fleet of the logistics industry.
The paper presents a real decision problem regarding the issue of planning the supply of LPG (a fuel popular in Poland) to petrol stations. A description of the elements of the decision problem is presented: inventory at station readings and forecasts, petrol stations categorization as well as planning and scheduling of tank truck delivery journeys. A linear programming model for Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW) was used to optimize routes. Planning and scheduling are developed for a three-day time horizon. The presentation contains a detailed description of the specifics of fuel supplies in the Polish market. Thus necessary modifications of the original VRPTW model are developed. The key change implemented by the research team was to make more flexible the selection of service stations whose stock levels were planned to be replenished on a specific date. Thanks to these adjustments, the modified VRPTW model better assigns fuel stations to the generated routes, which translates into more favorable values of the selected goal function (we anticipate the possibility of optimizing both route lengths, CO2 emissions, as well as the use of a metacriterion that considers both goal functions).
It is worth noting that the degree of improvement of the solutions depends, however, on the specificity of the geographical region for which the calculations were performed. The paper also presents problems with the practical implementation of the proposed changes in the VRPTW model.
Route planning currently deals with an increase in demands that must be satisfied swiftly and at the lowest possible costs. This is also the case with KOPOS Kolín a.s., which is one of the largest manufacturers of electrical installation materials. This company uses its own trucks to transport goods to various locations. Before the planning phase, it is necessary to take into account the available transport capacities and the wide portfolio of products offered, with different ranges of dimensions, shapes and weights. In general, transport tasks require a lot of processing time as well as the resources needed for calculation. Overall, this means that each plan is specific and must have a unique approach based on the requirements. Due to the computational complexity of vehicle routing problems, heuristic algorithms are necessary to be used to obtain a suitable solution to the problem. The aim of this paper is to use a heuristic algorithm based on the insertion method, and to develop an application in VBA for MS Excel which KOPOS company can use for daily route planning. The advantage of the application is the saving of company’s financial resources without the additional cost of special optimization software.
Product packaging plays an important role not only in managing direct and reverse material flows, but also in managing value for individual customer segments or micro-segments. While the design of secondary and tertiary packaging is more important from a supply chain management perspective, primary packaging is the most important for end consumers. When making purchasing decisions in consumer markets, consumers address various aspects of primary packaging, not only aspects that affect the economic viability of the purchase, but also environmental and social aspects. The perception of this importance is not uniform across the whole consumer population, and usually varies according to the different characteristics of consumer segments. This paper examines the variation in perceived importance of selected sustainable aspects of packaging in relation to consumer chemicals. It presents the results of primary quantitative research among 400 consumers of products such as cleaning agents, laundry detergents and personal care products. Using descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing and two-stage clustering methods, it defines the importance of different aspects of sustainable packaging and the differences in perceptions of this importance in relation to consumers' inclination towards environmental protection. The main conclusion of the paper is that all aspects of sustainable packaging are significantly more important to environmentally inclined consumers, but the ranking of the aspects studied in order of importance is the same for both the mainstream and environmentally inclined consumer segments. Consumers consider it most important that the packaging should provide clear and trustworthy information about the product and be recyclable. For environmentally oriented consumers, however, this is more important.
Sustainable business requires changes in the management of logistics activities. One of these activities is packaging, which has recently attracted the attention of many stakeholders in the supply chain. This paper focuses on consumer recognition of sustainable packaging for products of the chemical industry. Based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative research among Czech consumers (focus group, questionnaire survey), indicators of sustainable packaging are identified and their level of importance in consumer assessment of product sustainability is quantified. The results of the research showed that the important indicators of sustainable packaging include returnability of packaging, recyclability of packaging, refillability of packaging, use of recycled packaging materials and eco-label. While green customers pay more attention to most of the indicators compared to mainstream customers, the order of their perceived importance does not differ in principle. Both customer groups consider returnability and recyclability of packaging to be the most important indicators. The findings develop the existing knowledge on consumer perceptions of packaging and provide business managers with the necessary basis for developing appropriate sustainable packaging strategies.
